Skin Cancer Risk From Tanning Beds
A US laboratory study has indicated a potential increase in risk of developing non-melanoma skin cancer among those who use tanning beds. Researchers in New Hampshire recently conducted a population-based, case-controlled study to determine whether the beds heighten the risk of squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. They interviewed 900 patients with on of these cancers and, after adjusting for all the variables, found that artificial tanning increased the risks for both types. Women younger than 50 with sensitive skin appeared to be at particularly high risk. Their results were published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
